The Bearded Carpenter

I want to teach you how to build your own log cabin. HI, my name is Paul and welcome to my channel.
The Dream of my wife and I from childhood was to live in a log cabin in the country. Shortly after we married, that dream became a partial reality with our first off-grid log cabin, secluded in the foot hills of the Ouachita Mountains. Some years later, just down the valley, I built the log home of our dreams where we have lived and raised our family for nearly 25 years.
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with other professional log builders and have gleaned much from their knowledge. With that being said, my desire is to provide you with complete detailed information so that you can build your own log homestead, be it from off-grid tiny cabin to refined log home.
Next to God and family, log and timber building is my passion. Please join me as I endeavor to help you on your journey to making YOUR dream become a reality.

I learn so much from your videos, thank you.
Howdy Carol- I sure appreciate you watching our videos and for the nice comment. God bless you
This is my dream. To own my land , and with my own hands build a cabin like our forefathers.
Howdy y’all- I sure hope you can make your dream become a reality. God’s blessings to you
Was paradise point near Branson? We did some glas work there if so.
Howdy Joe- it’s in western Arkansas in the Ouachita Mountains. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless you
I love watching a true craftsman!
Howdy David- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. God bless you
漂亮的❤
Howdy- thank you so much for watching the video and for the kind words. God bless
I get the idea of scoring before hewing to prevent tear-out but, are you scoring from butt to tip or is it irrelevant unless in the case of right hand twist. Please expand on this. Thank you in advance!
Howdy Mark- I am right handed so I start at the end to my left and move forward. It doesn’t make any difference to me if I start on the butt or tip. In case of strong right hand grain l may hew only part of the way down the face of the log and turn it over and finish it. If a left handed broad axe you could hew from right to left and not have to turn the log over. I have a buddy that is right handed but hews left handed. Another friend was left handed but hewed right handed. It’s what feels comfortable to you. Thank you so much for watching the video and for the comment. Take care and God bless
That skilsaw!
Howdy y’all- it’s great for what I do. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
❤💪🙏yes sir that’s tough God bless brother
Howdy Daniel- I was pleased with how it turned out. Nice to have everything under roof. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
I love the build! How big of a log can you get in there?
Howdy Mike- thank you so much for the kind words. The posts are 20’ in between them but with someone helping me l can get a much longer log on the mill. I could easily mill a log 26’ if I had a tractor that could pick it up. God bless
It is looking great. your work is always so majestic. oh how i wish I was your neighbor. I woud love to learn from you with hands on and try to continue passing it on. May God continue to bless you Mr. Paul and your family.
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words. I would enjoy having someone around to share with. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Excellent craftsmanship, forgotten Art, carpenter's today is all about how fast , about like fast food, NO good HA ☺️❤️
Howdy Marilyn- thank you so much for the kind words. Yeah, nowadays it’s about speed. I don’t care for fast food lol. God’s blessings to you
Hello Paul. I did find one of these Speedmatic - 10 saws for sale on eBay, $225.00. I did not look to see if it is still for sale. The cuts that you make and how you do it is really interesting to me. If you were to have a live show when you put the bridge together, I would watch it in entirety. You put a lot more work into your builds than we are shown. Have good days!
Howdy Buddy- I haven’t looked for them on eBay. There will probably be a video of the full build. And yes, there’s quite a bit l don’t video, just what would be helpful to someone. Thank you so much for watching our videos. God bless you
Greetings and Salutations Well I was just saying on a Facebook status The log cabins foundation never has just chunks of wood & mulch mixed into the soil..... It isn't gold there I really never understand these build techniques & I study posture - chemistry That's why if I inherit a cabin ima get at least a barter for 702 buckets & form a grass hut Sticking with my #leafy_greens on this 1 you guys #Thirive_in_the_wilderness #survival_cabin #off_the_grid ✌️
Howdy y’all- I understand. Everyone has different likes and dislikes and that’s a good thing. I do appreciate you watching the video and commenting. Take care and God bless
,,,👍,,,
Howdy James- thank you so much for watching the video. Hope all is well up your way. God bless
does the old saw got a tin box
Howdy Steve- yes, it does. There’s a spare blade and wrench in the case. It would be nice to get a new blade but new 10” blades have a 5/8” arbor while this saw has a 3/4” arbor. Thank you so much for watching the video and commenting. God bless
Greetings from Torrance, So-Cal.. 7 or so years ago, my wife's grampa from Ironton, Ohio passed. He left me all of his tools. There were quite a few different size spoke shaves and many planes, along with an assortment of other tools. His wife, (my wife's grandma), had a grampa that was a German immigrant/carpenter and ''dory-man at San -Pedro, Ca.. That man built up a lot of the original houses/homes in the L.A.''the South Bay'' area. I thought you'd enjoy that story. Oh, and he tuned pianos on the side.
Howdy y’all- oh my goodness! You have something to be very proud of! Hang on to those old tools. They are priceless. Thank you so much for watching the video and sharing this. Enjoy them. God bless you
I would say that twenty people were doing something like this!!!
Howdy y’all- it’s kind of a popular design. I like the fact that I can store the saw head at the end of the track and leave the other end open for airflow. There is also room to park my old tractor there. Thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
I did a quick search on eBay and there’s two porter cable speed matic 10s on there for sale. They come with a metal case and some accessories.
Howdy Dixie- I have the case and an extra blade and wrench in the case. Thank you so much for watching the video and for the information. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Always a great video thank you ! Looking great
Howdy John- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. God bless
beautiful
Howdy Kathleen- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. God bless you
Good informational video Paul, have a wonderful weekend, thanks for sharing, YAH bless brother !
Howdy Michael- thank you so much for your kindness and for watching the video. God bless you
Hi Paul. When I watch you do a piece of wood art like that, it's crystal clear what an expert craftsman you are. At the same time it's obvious to me, how long way I still have to go, before I can even think of doing something like that. One thing we have in common on this project are, no drawings. I never make drawings, it's all ideas in my head. As always it's a treat and a pleasure to see you do your thing. I just love to sit back, watch, listen and learn. Thanks for yet another great time at school. All the best my friend - Michael.
Howdy Michael- I sure appreciate you watching our videos and for your support. I don’t always have a clear plan in my head and things kind of evolve as l go along. I usually have a clear understanding of what I’m doing but may not have everything completely figured out and fall back on previous experience to make it happen. I learn something every single day so I guess I’m not too old of a codger lol. I sure wish you and l could spend some time together. If you ever get to come over the big pond I’ll make sure you don’t go hungry lol. The Lady can really cook. Hope all is well. God bless
Thats awesome Paul! Love how it's all coming together. Take care out there ✌
Howdy Marc- thank you so much for the kind words. Hope you are doing well up there. Have a great week. God bless
I would love to see a drawing of the design.
Howdy Gregg- well, I don’t have a drawing. It was just in my head. Sometimes I have a little trouble pulling it out lol. It’s coming together nicely and hope to be finished soon. After I complete it I need to make a drawing of it. God bless
I have a Rockwell circular saw of the same vintage, they are tanks, they last forever. At about 2:17 you can see a little grease cup, you probably know this but I'll explain for others, that cup greases the bearings, every once in a while you give it a little turn and it pushes grease into the bearing. Unless you've changed it, the grease in the cup is probably old and dried out, if you are going to use it, you should clean out that old grease and put some good grease in it. Vintage Porter-Cable power tools are very collectable, it could be worth a couple hundred bucks, not that you'd ever sell it.
Howdy Bigred- they are tough old saws for sure. Yes, I’m aware of the grease cup. I have an old table saw that has them on the motor. A lot of my tools are somewhat vintage now but they still perform really well. I don’t think I could ever part with this old saw. My Dad bought it from a fellow who was working for him back in the late fifties. I think he paid him $50 for it. It still has the case it came in. I don’t use it much anymore but I’m hanging on to it. Thank you so much for watching the video and sharing this with us. Take care and God’s blessings to you
@@TheBeardedCarpenter They were very expensive, my 8 1/4" Rockwell was about fifty dollars when it was new in the 50s, adjusted for inflation that's $650, so your fathers 10" saw would have been even more expensive.
@@bigredc222 Thank you for the information. Much appreciated. Blessings
Paul your an amazing carpenter sawmill shed is epic god bless
Howdy Brian- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching our videos. Hope all is well. God bless you
I just love the detail in your work, brother Paul. Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Howdy Luc- thank you so much for the kindness and for watching our videos. Lord bless y’all
You sound like myself. Most of the work I do when building furniture is spontaneous straight out of what I see in my mind. As an engineer it seems to just flow right out of my brain and in to a piece of work. Awesome work as usual. Keep it up and thanks for sharing. God Bless you and yours. 🙏🙏🙏
Howdy y’all- I certainly understand what you mean. I think sometimes the project is even more enjoyable when you can just flow with your work. Also, it seems to be more therapeutic. I sure appreciate you watching our videos. God’s blessings to y’all
Bravo Paul, the thing that I always find very beautiful is that in addition to your passion and your skills, it is that what you do seems to make you happy. Blessings my Friend.
Howdy FD- thank you so much for the support. Yes, I really enjoy what I do and it does make me happy. I’m thankful for the knowledge and skills that have come with many years of experience and being able to learn from some of the best. Hope you have a blessed weekend. God be with you
Hello Paul. When your mallet was new, did it resemble a near perfect cylinder and came to look like a partially eaten apple over time with use? It nearly looks like it has layers from the end where the handle is. I really like the way you make these cuts that you do, all of them. Have good days!
Howdy Buddy- well, it wasn’t perfectly round to begin with. It’s a piece of dogwood that went down in a tornado many years ago at a job site. I just used my carving bar and carved a handle on it. It’s been in use for over 25 years. I had one that was turned on the lathe that was made from persimmon. I still have it but retired it when I made this one. There’s still a tiny bit of bark on the dogwood mallet. Thank you so much for watching the video and for your observation. Take care and God’s blessings to you
I enjoy watching you make art. When I have a job to do, I always keep score by how much I got done in a day. Doing that means “as much as I like fancy for nice, there’s no time for doing those extra steps”. I wish I could adapt to your laid back style. Happiness is supposed to be a way of traveling, not a destination. I’m glad you are able to do it the right way. Keep up the good work. 🥸👍👀👋✅
Howdy y’all- I understand sometimes you have to make hay while the sun is shining. Been there and done that. For me it’s so much more enjoyable to work the way l do. I get a lot of satisfaction. Take care and God bless you
As I watched this morning I was thinking on how you are an artist using cuts curves and placement of wood poles. Creating a master piece what ever it is cabin shed smokehouse all your talents revealed 😂👍
Howdy Armida- I sure appreciate the kind words and for watching our videos. I enjoy what I do and have been so blessed to get to do it. Hope all is well. God bless you
Great vid (as always) Thank you for sharing!
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching the video. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Looking great, Paul. Would love to know when you might be installing the bridge and where. I’d enjoy coming down and seeing that. I know you’ve got a lot more work to do until that happens. Maybe you can update us when you know more.
Howdy Gregg- what I’ve got done is ahead of the videos. Where are you located? This is in a town in western Arkansas. Don’t know where you live but if you’re close enough you might could drive by. My email is thebeardedcarpenter8@gmail.com. God’s blessings to you

Howdy y’all- thank you so much for the kind words and for watching our videos. Hope all is well. God bless you
Well done sir! I wish my beam saw was that nice, mine is an old bronze colored one with no tags or labels. It could be a skil but not sure. Bought it in a pawn shop with my slicks. Gave 65 bucks for the bunch.
Howdy y’all- if it cuts it should be a good one. I have another one that is a Ryobi. You got a good deal especially with a slick. They are becoming harder to find. Take care and God’s blessings to you
WOW, that Porter Cable saw is a BEAST from the past and a true gem of a tool. Great video as always Paul. Stay safe my friend and as always, my respects to you and your family
Howdy Brother from across the pond - yeah, to be as old as it is, it cuts really square. Hope you are doing well. Take care and God’s blessings to you
Your dad's Porter Cable circular saw is a real treasure. A testament to manufacturing days gone by. How wonderful to put it to use on this fine project.
Howdy y’all- yes, it is for sure. I have several of my Dad’s old tools that are still in really good condition and work great. They don’t build em like they used to. Thank you so much for watching our videos. God bless you
Nice video 😊
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for watching the video. God bless
"not bad for an old dinosaur" still doing top notch work Paul looks good
Howdy Cory- thank you so much for watching the video. For an oldie it still cuts great. Hope everything is going well with you and your project. Take care and God’s blessings to you
You're a good man. I just bought 10 acrss outside Huntsville TX. Theres easily 300 to 500 8" straight pine trees for a log cabin.
Howdy Shane- that’s great that you have a lot of timber. I’d say you have enough to build a cabin. I sure appreciate you watching the video. Take care and God’s blessings to you

Beautiful wood and great job…new subscriber!
Howdy y’all- thank you so much for watching the video and for subscribing to our channel. God’s blessings to you
As i watch the video it seems like you are using green lunber right off the mill, is that a big concern, I will be putting one up myself but not sure if i should wait for my lumber to dry for a Year.
Howdy Billy- some of the wood was fairly green but the timbers had been milled for several months. The wood l used for the storage room was completely dry when I put the batten strips on and made the door and trim. I’ve had no problems with it. Hope this helps. God bless
I like that Japanese slick you have, can you tell me who makes it and what model it is?
Howdy Mark- it’s a nice slick for sure. I normally use a bigger slick for log building. I don’t know who the maker is on the Japanese slick or what model it is. It was a gift from a good friend. It has Japanese writing on it but I can’t read it. I’ll try to find out something about it. God bless
@@TheBeardedCarpenter hello Mr BC, don’t go to any trouble, I thought you might have known off the top of your head. Thank you and I enjoy your videos and the beauty of timber construction.
Is this the same white oaks that are in KY?
Howdy Travis- post oak and white oaks are two different species. However, I was told by a dendrocronologist that you can’t tell them apart in a lab. They have different leaves, bark and acorns. Evidently the properties of the wood is the same. Whereabouts in Kentucky are you? I helped a friend of mine get started on his log cabin in Berea, Kentucky a couple years ago. Beautiful country. God bless y’all
@@TheBeardedCarpenter , western KY, thank you for the reply, I am planning on a cabin build next year. I was told most of these oaks are being used for railroad, it looked like you were building with them, I may try to do something with them.
@@TravisLambert A lot of the good oaks are being cut up into railroad ties. If you could get oak for your cabin it would be really good. I would use oak if I could get it. Blessings
Fabulous. When can I visit 😂
Howdy Andrea- well, I guess you can come bout any time. Take care and God bless you
